The Egyptian Goddess of cats, Bastet (or Bast) is both a lioness warrior Goddess and protector against evil spirits and as a fertility Goddess, being associated with the Moon and children. She was also revered as a Goddess of music and dance because of the rattle she is often depicted with, called the Sistrum. She is best known, however, as the Goddess of cats. In ancient Egypt her priests considered cats to be sacred animals who were worthy of being mummified when they passed on.
