Baphomet is widely recognized from Eliphas Levi's depiction as a rendition of the "Sabbatic Goat", representing the dual nature of reality. In Levi's representation, Baphomet embodies the balance of forces in the universe - male and female, light and dark, left and right, as above, so below. Although the origins of Baphomet are unclear, his name is referenced in relation to the arrest and torture of the Knights Templar and their alleged association with a pagan figure known as "the Baphomet." Eliphas Levi, however, resurrected the name of the "Sabbatic Goat" or "The Goat of Mendes" in his book Dogma and Rituals of High Magic. The image itself combines elements of the Kabbalistic tradition, Hermeticism and Alchemy.
